When I’m craving something “meaty” (yes, it happens!) I love Gardenburger Riblets and Alexia Sweet Potato Fries. If only the Gardenburger Riblets were a little healther (no high fructose corn syrup please), I would eat this more often. It’s still great, and as far as cravings go, it’s pretty harmless.

I did a little experimenting with vegan bakalva, and it’s quite easy to make. I layered fillo dough (brushed with melted Earth Balance margarine) and ground up nuts (almonds and walnuts seasoned with a little cinnamon and nutmeg). Baked at 350 for around 30 or 40 minutes, and then I poured a simple syrup over it. Next time, I am going to try to use agave instead.

Fillo dough is surprisingly easy to work with – especially if you keep the dough covered with a damp towel!

I made this homemade sauce for Thanksgiving, and so far, I want to put it on almost everything! I used a 2:1 ratio of cranberries to pomegranate seeds, a little water, a bit of good quality vanilla, and agave nectar to taste. I boiled it down for ten minutes, and it set pretty nicely as it cooled. The pomegranate seeds go really well with the cranberries. They don’t compete with the flavor but instead add a subtle complexity.

This sauce is a really great alternative to canned cranberry sauce. Cranberries are naturally healthy (I used organic ones), and the agave nectar keeps the glysemic index low. Pomegranates are another super food that protect against heart disease and maybe even cancer.

I eat a lot of hummus, and I never hold back from it. The classic ingredients for hummus are super healthy:

Chickpeas – tons of fiber and folate

Seasame Seeds (tahini) – tons of copper, magnesium, and calcium

Garlic – great for your cardio health, plus good for warding off all sorts of bacteria and viruses

Lemon – vitamin c!

I wish I could say that I’ve found a really good national brand of hummus, but I haven’t. They all seem to skimp on the tahini and just get the overall flavors wrong. I recommend getting hummus at your local Mediterranean or Middle Eastern restaurant, if possible. That way, you can know what good hummus tastes like before you experiment with making it at home.

Tazo Joy Tea (from my local Starbucks) + Silk Nog (from any local grocer in my area) + Soyatoo vegan whipped cream (from Whole Foods)

Very yummy, and only about 100-150 calories for a huge 16 ounce serving.

I just tried this Original Ricemilk Choco Bar tonight, and I was impressed by how milky and great it tastes. Vegan dark chocolate is already awesome, and now there’s a really good “milk” chocolate alternative.

If you’re vegan and you miss milk chocolate, this is the bar for you. If you’re vegan, and you like chocolate in general, this is still the bar for you. I’m dreaming of making some vegan “milk” chocolate truffles now!
